I'm a Green Pea (How I Make My Money, Honey)

You ever read someone's blog and wonder what they do for a living? I know I do. I just can't help, but curious. I admit it, I'm nosy.

I had a great seven month stint as a stay-at-home wife, and enjoyed it. It was great to take a break from going nonstop for two years.

Exciting news though! I actually just started a job about two weeks ago as a Green Pea. Well, actually, I am a Sales Consultant at a car dealership. A "green pea" refers to as a brand-new Sales Consultant. Let me be clear: a sales consultant is not the same thing as a "car salesman." Just saying. "Car salesman" has such a negative connotation. I promise as a sales consultant, we are more than that.

The particular dealership that I work at is one of the best places to buy a car (It has been voted and won awards and whatnot). I also believe that it is one of the largest in the city, if not state. At the dealership, we sell SIX makes of cars (including the different models of those SIX makes), as well as a huge inventory of used cars, in addition to the new cars. I don't want to say which brands, because if you know my city, it wouldn't be hard to find out. I work in one of the showrooms (obviously) on the property that sell premium luxury cars.

It is a lot of hours, and is challenging (I am NOT complaining). I actually enjoy it! I really look forward to going to work! Just about everyone that works there is there everyday (or at least I think so). I love how even though it is "competitive," people are still encouraging and supportive. Plus, it isn't cut-throat like other places that you might encounter.  Honestly, the work environment is great.

There's a whole different world of lingo and processes. You won't believe what goes into everything. You know, the behind-the-scenes type of stuff that only someone on the inside sees? It is all so interesting to me. Stereotypically, I am in a man's world. I mean, the women are still outnumbered, since it is a male-dominated field.

The nature of my job should be self-explanatory. Even though, it is much more complex than that, I can't give away the inside secrets, you know? :)

Speaking of me being a Green Pea, I'm a total newbie. I mean, wasn't everyone at one point? I have training coming up, and I'm still constantly learning. I've had experience in sales (makeup, magazine subscriptions, advertisements, and shoes), but nothing commissioned and nothing this expensive. Cars are the second most expensive purchase that someone will make.

Some good news though...

I hadn't quite finished my first week, and one night I was feeling kind of down, because I hadn't sold anything. I know, stupid? I mean, I had only been there less than a week! Well, guess what happened? Two days later, I sold my first car!!! (Well, it was a split deal with another sales consultant. We both worked with them. Still a sale though!). One in my first week, say what? Then FOUR DAYS later, I sold another one!

I'm going to stay positive, and hopefully will do even better!

Some background info about my education:

I graduated in four years with TWO bachelor degrees in May 2008. One was in Psychology and the other was in Communication. In January 2010, I began graduate school to obtain my master's degree. In December 2011, I obtained my master's degree in Counseling.

During graduate school, I worked in the (one aspect of the) "field." In all honesty, it just wasn't for me. Some people have judged and questioned me, for not planning on "using" my degree or told me that I should've quit graduate school, if I had no plans of using it. All I have to say is those people are sad and pissed me off. They have no right to question my choices. (No one has said anything now, but they did in the past!)

I would rather be doing something I enjoy, rather than something that I don't. Also, it isn't because of the "economy" or not being able to find a job in the "field" that I'm not using my degree. I had always been interested in Sales/Marketing, and things along those lines.

YOUR DEGREE DOESN'T DEFINE YOU OR DICTATE YOUR FUTURE (I mean, unless you want it to. Nothing wrong with that, as in using your degree for its "intended use." Just don't think because you have a certain degree and don't want to use it, you are stuck. Find a way to make it relevant to something that you want to do. It can be possible depending on the circumstances. Some degrees and jobs and can be related even though they are not "directly" related).

Go after what makes YOU happy, and don't do what other people think you "should" do. It's your life, and it is up to you to be happy!

Def agree - you don't HAVE to use your degree. As long as you are doing what makes you happy that is all that matters! Best of luck in your new position, it sounds really awesome and the fact that you love going to work every day speaks volumes. Thanks for linking up! Loved reading.

Very cool! SoldierMan's dad has worked for car dealerships for a number of years. Yes, there's a LOT that goes on behind the scenes ;) It makes for very interesting car-buying experiences for us.

i worked at a car dealership for three months after college! i was the only girl car sales"men" and i used to pray to get fired! lol! the thing was, the first 3 months they guaranteed you $3000. even if you didn't make the commission on the cars. but, you had to make it to the end of the month or they only paid you minimum wage ($6.50/hr at that time). or, if they fired you you got to keep it. i made it till like the 26th day of the 3rd month and then was like, im outttt!! hahah.

it was fun for the first month but i realized quickly how hard it was to work the long days - even though they said 9-5, if you left at 5 w/o selling a car you were really looked down upon, so i ended up doing 9-9 most days, and then we had sunday and one other day off during the week so it was hard to never even have two days in a row off to relax!

but, obviously, not everywhere is the same so i really hope you like it! seems like it's really good so far!!

I had no idea that this is the job that you chose! I thought that it was something with your degree in counseling, but I'm so glad you went with a job that made your heart happy!!! I can't wait to hear how many more cars you get to sell. I'm SO curious about what brands you deal with though ;)
